Description
Nicolas Burguet Gevrey-Chambertin "Les Crais" 2021 is a single-vineyard village-level Pinot Noir from the Les Crais lieu-dit in Gevrey-Chambertin, one of the most celebrated villages of Burgundy's Côte de Nuits. Produced from 100% Pinot Noir, the wine offers a focused expression of its individual vineyard site rather than being assembled from numerous parcels across the appellation.
Nicolas Burguet established his own domaine in 2015, following more than two decades of practical winemaking experience in Burgundy and building upon his family's longstanding connection with viticulture in the region. His approach emphasizes respect for individual terroirs and limited intervention, with vineyard work avoiding herbicides and chemical pesticides in favour of mechanical cultivation and manual work. Grapes are harvested by hand and carefully sorted before vinification.
The Les Crais vineyard lies on the lower, eastern side of the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation, where the soils contain significant limestone and stony material. The site's relatively free-draining character contributes freshness and definition to the wines. Les Crais is a substantial named climat within Gevrey-Chambertin and is classified at village level rather than Premier Cru.
The 2021 Burgundy vintage was notably cooler and more challenging than the warmer vintages immediately preceding it, producing Pinot Noir wines that generally favour aromatic freshness, moderate concentration and precision over sheer ripeness and power. In Nicolas Burguet's Les Crais, this translates into an elegant expression of Gevrey-Chambertin, with fresh red fruit, fine tannins, savoury complexity and mineral character.
With its combination of Gevrey structure and the freshness of the 2021 vintage, Nicolas Burguet Gevrey-Chambertin Les Crais 2021 can be enjoyed relatively young with appropriate aeration, while several additional years of bottle ageing should allow its fruit, earthy complexity and tertiary Burgundy characteristics to develop further.
